Here are additional classroom resources that are great in assisting students on their journey to become global citizens:
Digital Learning Resources and Collaboration Tools
Padlet is an excellent tool for displaying new learning in a fun, cool way! Students may customize their content and share. Padlet is a great platform for students to show different perspectives on certain issues.
Flipgrid allows students to share their knowledge with others through video recordings. They can make short videos to express their opinions on a variety of topics. This is an ideal tool for visual learners. Flipgrid also gives students a chance to flex their creative muscles and take ownership of their learning.
VoiceThread is an audio source that allows student to collaborate and share conversations about different topics and ideas. My ESL students used VoiceThread to record conversations on certain topics. After hearing their voices, they discussed ways to increase their speaking skills. They implemented the changes, and I noticed a substantial improvement in the speaking domain. I credit VoiceThread as the resource that helped my students improve their oral language.
Biteable allows students to use animation to present information. This is a great way for students to engage in storytelling. Students are able to “build” characters, develop settings, and use text to express problems and solutions. Biteable is an absolutely free source.
For educators looking for opportunities to use a variety of text features to present information, the SAMR Model may be ideal. Teachers and students can break away from tradition and use graphics in a fun, new way.
International Children’s Digital Library is a database of children’s books that represent communities around the world.
National Geographic Kids allows students to explore different countries and geographical features.
Common Sense Education provides teachers with tools to help their students become digitally literate.
Fairytalez is a website that offers a treasure trove of fairy tales from communities around the world. I used this site to find stories around the world that were similar to the American version of Cinderella. My students loved the different variations and wanted to learn more about the different cultures.
Kids World Citizen explores different ways to help children become culturally savvy.
Global Math Stories is a website the combines math with culture and literacy. I used this site with one of my classes. They learned about Rwanda and why it is important for the country to have days in which the citizens clean their communities. This information heightened the interest of my students and made the math portion of the story more engaging.
