Community Resources

According to Asia Society, Tennessee saw a 79% increase in the foreign born population from 2000 to 2010. Fortunately, Memphis offers a wide variety of resources and programs to help its citizenry develop an understanding of the diverse populations in our community. Here are a few programs and activities:

Memphis in May International Festival is an annual festival that spotlights different countries. Festival coordinators provide teachers with instructional resources to help students gain a better understanding of the selected nations.

Memphis is host to the Africa In April Cultural Awareness Festival. The festival salutes one of the fifty-five countries in Africa each year. Students are encouraged to participate in festival events.

Tennessee World Cultural Affairs promotes an understanding of diverse communities within the state of Tennessee. Student members may participate in Academic WorldQuest, a competition that tests students’ knowledge of global affairs.

Croft Institute for International Studies at the University of Mississippi offers teachers an opportunity to participate in the East Asia Seminar. The seminar helps educators gain a deeper awareness of culture in selected Asian countries. The program also facilitates a study abroad program for teachers.

Confucius Institute University of Memphis promotes Asian Studies and study abroad programs in China.

Rotary Club of Memphis sponsors international humanitarian projects. The organization also encourages civic engagement and community leadership.
